This area of our work focuses on supporting and celebrating Francophone cultures by promoting the French language and the cultural and linguistic diversity of French-speaking communities, particularly in minority contexts such as Prince George and British Columbia. Our efforts strengthen Francophone education, heritage-language transmission, training, and research, while fostering dialogue and collaboration between Francophone communities across Canada and internationally. Experiential and applied learning opportunities, including co-developed UNBC courses, allow students to engage directly with cultural knowledge, community practices, and heritage-language initiatives, building both academic skills and cross-cultural understanding.
Public outreach and community engagement are central to this work. Initiatives such as International Mother Language Day celebrations highlight the importance of linguistic diversity and heritage-language maintenance globally. Webinars like “La Francophonie au Canada” and “La Diversité des Francophonies” provide accessible platforms for dialogue on the experiences, challenges, and successes of French-speaking communities, while children’s “Morning Readings” programs foster early appreciation of language and cultural storytelling. Through a wide range of collaborative projects with Francophone and French-language speakers, our work supports the preservation and revitalization of the French language, strengthens community networks, and ensures that Francophone heritage, knowledge, and creativity are recognized, valued, and transmitted to current and future generations.
